One bad inning dooms PCM baseball in season-ending loss

Twelve hits not enough for Mustangs in district loss to Pleasantville

GILMAN — Twelve hits was not enough for PCM’s baseball team on Saturday during the Mustangs’ postseason game with Pleasantville.

PCM held a small lead in the sixth inning, but the Trojans scored six runs in the sixth and eliminated the Mustangs 10-6.

Pleasantville finished with 13 hits and just one error. PCM committed three errors and all three miscues led to Pleasantville runs.

“You have to give Pleasantville credit,” PCM baseball coach Jeff Lindsay said. “They were able to get us in the sixth.”

In the deciding sixth frame, Pleasantville (15-18) loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, the Trojans scored a few runs before a PCM error extended the game. Pleasantville plated a few more runs and it turned out to be the difference in an otherwise evenly played game.

The game was tied at 4-all through five innings. PCM (8-15) scored one run in the top of the sixth and seventh but couldn’t overcome Pleasantville’s six-run sixth.

Five Mustangs had at least two hits. Andrew Mitchell led the offense with three hits, two runs, three stolen bases and one walk.

Sage Burns, Cade Lindsay, Caleb Duinink and Beau Webb all tallied two hits.

Burns added two RBIs and one steal, Webb doubled, scored one run and had one RBI and Lindsay scored one run. One of Duinink’s hits was a double.

Easton Webb finished with one hit, two runs and two RBIs and was hit by one pitch. Gavin Fenton also was hit by a pitch.

“We had really good discipline and a good approach,” Coach Lindsay said. “The guys did really well at the plate.”

Beau Webb (4-3) started on the mound and pitched into the sixth inning but took the loss. He allowed 10 runs — eight earned — on 12 hits with seven strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter in 5 2/3 innings.

Durant Van Dyke got the final out on a strikeout and also hit one batter.

“Beau pitched well,” Coach Lindsay said. “He pitched well enough to win.”
