Baxter splits with conference foe GMG

GARWIN — Jake Travis had three hits and pitched into the sixth inning, Cody Damman and Rory Heer each had two hits and Baxter’s baseball team earned a season split against GMG on Friday.

The Bolts grabbed an early lead and a five-run fourth inning helped send the visitors to a 9-6 road win.

Both teams had 10 hits and the Bolts (3-11 overall, 3-7 in the conference) overcame six errors.

Travis doubled, had three hits, scored one and had one RBI at the plate and allowed six runs — two earned — on six hits with five strikeouts, one walk and two hit batters in 5 2/3 innings on the mound.

Travis got the pitching win and Damman earned the save after surrendering no runs and no hits with three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.

Damman also finished with two hits, three runs, three RBIs, one walk and one hit by pitch at the plate. One of his hits was a triple.

Heer had two hits, two runs, one walk and one steal, Perrin Sulzie collected one hit, two RBIs and one walk and Jalen Porter added one walk, one hit by pitch and two RBIs.

Ben Richardson and Brad Matthews both tallied one hit and one run, Cael Shepley walked twice and Nate McMinamen scored one run.

GMG (4-13, 3-7) got two hits from Zach Krull and three RBIs from Brock Teske. Krull also took the loss on the mound after walking six and hitting two batters in four innings.

The win helped the Bolts split the season series with GMG, which won the earlier meeting in Baxter.

SOFTBALL

GMG 11, Baxter 3

The Bolts were limited to five hits and plagued by six errors as an eight-run sixth inning sent GMG to an 11-3 home win in Iowa Star Conference South Division play on Friday.

Mandee Selover, Lilie Vansice, Maddie Pierce, Evelyn Boothroyd and Allyson Padget had one hit apiece for the Bolts (6-8, 6-4).

Selover led the offense with one run, one RBI and one steal. Pierce tallied one run and stole one base, Boothroyd had one RBI and Vansice scored one run.

Kinley Bethards took the loss in the circle after allowing six runs — four earned — on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Holly Zahurones got the final two outs but she allowed five runs — two earned —on three hits with one walk.

The Wolverines (5-13, 3-5) lost the first meeting in Baxter but split the season series with the home win.
