Six Cardinals earn boys all-conference recognition

Jack Suttek highlights LHC teams for Newton boys

Senior Jack Suttek had a breakout season for Newton’s boys soccer team this past spring.

He tied for the team lead in total points and scored a team-best seven goals. That helped him earn first team all-conference honors in the Little Hawkeye Conference and honorable mention all-state honors by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Suttek was one of six Cardinals to earn all-conference recognition. He was the only Newton player named to the first team but juniors Hunter Kennedy, Derek Beiner and Breyton Schwenker all were second-team selections and senior Anthony Bestell and freshman Nate Lampe were the honorable mention picks.

The Cardinals hung their hat on the defensive side of the field this season. They recorded eight shutouts and three of those came in conference play. The offense only scored more than two goals in LHC matches once.

Suttek was a bright spot as a midfielder and earned first-team honors in that position. He scored one goal and had one assist in conference play and led the team with seven goals overall. He scored a team-best 15 points, which helped him earn all-state recognition.

Beiner also scored 15 points for Newton and had one assist in conference play to land him a spot on the second team as a midfielder.

Kennedy was a second-team forward after scoring one goal and tallying one assist. He had 13 points total this spring.

Schwenker and Lampe were two reasons the defense played so well. Schwenker was the only non-freshman of the group and all four defenders return next season.

Bestell and Lampe started all 19 matches this season for the Cardinals.
