Central Iowa United soccer sweeps Thunder, Panthers

Lilie Vansice scores 12th goal of the season in win over Grand View Christian

DES MOINES — Central Iowa United’s girls soccer team is getting hot at the perfect time.

Recording its fifth shutout the season, CIU won its third straight match following a 4-0 road win over Grand View Christian on Monday.

Lilie Vansice scored a pair of goals to take over the team lead, Brooke Christie maintained her scoring lead with another goal and CIU won for their fifth time in six matches.

“We came out playing a little timid for about the first 20 minutes,” CIU girls soccer coach Sadie Jones said. “We are looking forward to the next two practices where we can work on better first touches and winning the ball out of the air.”

Christie cracked the scoreboard midway through the first half with a penalty kick. It was her 11th goal of the season. Kenzi Wierson put in her fifth of the spring to make it 2-0.

It was 3-0 at halftime after Vansice’s first goal. She completed the scoring with a second-half goal. Her 12 goals leads the team.

Reagan Franzen delivered her team-best sixth assist and Tori Bienfang also had an assist. Keeper Elise Robertson had six saves in goal.

Central Iowa United is now 8-5 on the season and Grand View Christian dropped to 5-6.

MAXWELL — Christie scored twice, Vansice, Avery Fricke and Izabell Voelker all scored one goal and Robertson tallied 10 saves in the home win.

Central Iowa United led 2-0 at halftime and put away the game with three goals in the second half.

Cassy Berg had the team’s only assist.

“It was a very good night for our team,” Jones said. “I told the girls each one of them had a role in the win. I feel like the team continues to keep getting better each day.”

Panorama dropped to 10-6 on the season.

BOYS

Central Iowa United 7, Grand View Christian 1

MAXWELL — Curtis Horras scored twice, Andrew Tollefson had two goals and an assist and Central Iowa United’s boys soccer team cruised past Grand View Christian 7-1 on Monday.

CIU (5-10) won its second straight match behind nine saves from Tanner Scroggins and seven saves from Treyton Travis.

Ben Richardson and Dane Beattie had one goal and one assist, Sean Finch added a goal and Travis dished out an assist.

Central Iowa United 5, Panorama 4

MAXWELL — Beattie scored his second goal of the night in overtime, Horras tallied two goals and two assists and CIU downed Panorama 5-4 in the extra session.

Central Iowa United led 3-1 at halftime but the Panthers forced overtime after a 3-1 second half.

Ephram Muntz tallied two assists, Beattie had one assist and Bradley Thomas scored one goal.

Scroggins had 17 saves in goal for CIU.

The Panthers dropped to 3-14 on the season.

Des Moines Christian 5, Central Iowa United 1

MAXWELL — Scroggins stopped 13 shots and Horras tallied the team’s lone goal during a 5-1 home loss to Class 1A No. 16 Des Moines Christian on Thursday.

Hunter Perez set up Horras with an assist. The Lions improved to 10-5 on the season.
