Baxter’s Tuhn, Selover advance to state track meet

Bolts compete in tough field at Madrid

MADRID — Elie Tuhn and Mandee Selover both had to wait a day after participating in the Class 1A state qualifier on Thursday.

They both faced tough fields in their respective events and neither could find the win column.

But after the official state qualifiers list was released, both Tuhn and Selover found out they performed quite well in the district meet.

Both Bolts will represent Baxter at the state track and field meet this week after qualifying in three events.

Tuhn will run in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs in 1A at the state meet, while Selover will take part in the long jump.

The Baxter girls’ top finish was third and they did that four times. The Bolts finished sixth in the team standings with 49 points. Madrid won the meet with 114 points and Fort Dodge St. Edmond (99), Lynnville-Sully (90), Collins-Maxwell (89) and Ogden (74) completed the top five.

The Baxter boys were shut out of qualifying for the state meet. That team placed eighth in the team standings with 36.5 points. Madrid cruised to the team title with 195.5 points followed by St. Edmond (115), Lynnville-Sully (101), Ogden (70) and Collins-Maxwell (61).

Only the winner of each event at the 1A qualifiers earned an automatic bid into state. The next best 14 times or distances grabbed at-large bids.

Selover was third in the long jump. She set a career-best leap by more than six inches with a jump of 15 feet, 10 3/4 inches. That was good enough to earn a top 15 leap overall heading into the state meet.

Tuhn also had times in the top 15 in both the 1,500 and 3,000.

She was fourth in the 3,000 with a season-best time of 11 minutes, 27.83 seconds. That sits ninth in 1A heading into the state meet.

In the 1,500, Tuhn was fifth with a time of 5:23.76. That time was the 15th best qualifying time in 1A.

Bree Buswell was third in two events. She finished the 100 hurdles in third with a season-best time of 17.56 seconds. She was third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:16.07.

The Bolts’ 4x800 relay team was third and the distance medley relay foursome took fourth.

The 4x800 relay team of Kailee Conradi, Morgan Ratliff, Regan Russell and Tuhn ran a season-best time by 12 seconds, finishing third in 10:46.32.

The distance medley relay also ran a season-best time. Maddie Pierce, Maggie Schabilion, Selover and Conradi finished fourth in 4:44.49.

The Baxter boys’ top finish was third, coming from Rory Heer in the 800. He was clocked in 2:09.56.

The 4x800 relay team of Carson Scroggins, Cody Damman, Cody Samson and Heer were fourth in 9:19.99.

Heer was fifth in the 1,600. He ran a season-best time of 5:01.

The Bolts were sixth in three events — Nate McMinamen in both the discus (113-11) and shot put (season-best 41-6) and Ashton Kerwin (1:04.25) in the 400 hurdles.

The Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Tuhn runs in the 1A girls 3,000 at around 4:10 p.m. on Thursday. Selover competes in the long jump at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Tuhn’s 1,500 will be at 5:05 p.m. on Saturday.
