Newton girls finish fifth in LHC tennis tournament

Henwood goes 2-1, takes third at Flight 1 singles

NORWALK — Chassidy Henwood moved her singles record to 9-2 and led Newton’s girls tennis team to a fifth-place finish in the Little Hawkeye Conference tournament on Monday.

Henwood finished third at Flight 1 singles and the Cardinals scored 25 points in fifth place.

Oskaloosa won the tournament championship with 36 points. Indianola (32) was second, Pella (32) finished third and Grinnell (28) completed the top five. Pella Christian (23) ended up sixth and host Norwalk (22) finished seventh in the seven-team field.

Henwood was seeded fourth and finished third after going 2-1 on the day. She started with a straight-set win and won her third-place match 6-4, 6-4. She lost to top-seeded Paige Bily of Indianola 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Lauryn Garrett competed in Flight 2 singles and Maggie Garrett and Katie McConnell teamed up at Flight 1 doubles. At Flight 2 doubles, Kya Butler and Alyssa Shannon lost twice and finished seventh.

Lauryn Garrett was seeded fourth and finished fourth after going 1-2 on the day. She won her first match in straight sets and lost her third-place contest in three sets.

Maggie Garrett and McConnell were seeded fifth and finished fourth after going 1-2. They also won their opener in straight sets.
