INDIANOLA — Rylee Heryford tied a school record, all six Newton girls varsity golfers set new personal-best scores and the Cardinals buried three Little Hawkeye Conference foes during a road quadrangular at Indianola Country Club on Monday.
Newton claimed the first three individual positions and put all six golfers in the top nine as the Cardinals shot a season-best 167. Indianola was second with a 195 and Oskaloosa (3) and Grinnell (2) had five total golfers but not enough for a team score.
“The girls put together some very nice scores,” Newton girls golf coach Ashley Kahler said. “Shooting a 167 is right where we want to be heading into conference and regionals.”
Heryford’s personal-best nine-hole score of 34 was good enough for medalist honors and also tied a nine-hole school record with Jasmine Yoder, who shot a 34 back in 2011.
The 34 by Heryford also ties the best nine-hole score in the state this season with West Des Moines Valley’s Paige Hoffman.
“Things were clicking for (Rylee) and it was great to see her perform to her ability,” Kahler said. “Bekah and Abby added great scores and showed great senior leadership. It was a fun day at the golf course.”
Bekah Vasseau was the runner-up medalist with a personal-best 41 and Abby Price shot a personal-best 42 to finish third. The final counting score came from Marin Pettigrew, who finished seventh with a personal-best 50.
Ella Price and Madison Price finished eighth and ninth, respectively, with personal-best non-counting scores of 55 and 56.
