Newton girls soccer loses to Pella in double OT

Cazett scores her fifth goal of the season in Cardinals’ 2-1 loss

Brynn Cazett scored in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, but Pella’s girls soccer team scored in the final minutes of double overtime to edge the Cardinals, 2-1, on Thursday at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

Pella led the Little Hawkeye Conference match 1-0 at halftime.

Cazett tied the match with 1:05 to go in regulation. Cazett’s fifth goal of the season was set up by Audrey Rausch’s fifth assist of the spring.

“The girls played some outstanding soccer, possibly the best game they’ve played all season,” Newton girls soccer coach Abby Lamont said. “Each player never let up and played for 100 minutes. (Assistant coach) Susan (Altemeier) and I were incredibly proud of their play.”

The Cardinals were down two starters, according to Lamont.

“We had some of our game changers really step up to the plate for our team,” Lamont said.

Pella (5-1 overall, 1-1 in conference play) out-shot the Cardinals (4-4, 1-1) 28-10 in shots. Newton goalie Aurora Nehring had 16 saves in the match.
