Newton girls track finishes fourth at Ottumwa

Terpstra wins the 100 hurdles in season-best time

OTTUMWA — Addy Terpstra was the lone winner for Newton’s girls track and field team on Tuesday.

Terpstra won the 100-meter hurdles and the Cardinals finished third in three other events as Newton placed fourth in the seven-team field at the 71st Annual Don Newell Classic.

Host Ottumwa (160) won the meet, while Iowa City West (145) and Oskaloosa (142) were next. Newton was better than Burlington (41), Albia (39) and Pella (13).

Terpstra won the 100 hurdles in a season-best 16.98 seconds. JaQuay Priest gave the Cardinals double points in sixth with a season-best time of 19.2.

The three third-place finishes came from Marissa Cunningham in the discus and in the 4x100 and 4x800 relays.

Cunningham’s season-best throw of 93 feet, 10 inches netted her a bronze medal.

The 4x100 relay team of Priest, Libby Shores, Terpstra and Chloe Rorabaugh finished in 54.81. The 4x800 relay team of Kate Muckler, Ashay Malow, Morgan Stalzer and Kelsey Church finished the race in a season-best 11:30.62.

Priest was fourth in the 200 in a season-best 29.52, Kealey Manning took fifth in the shot put with a season-best heave of 33-0 1/2 and Grace Benson was sixth in the 1,500 in a season-best time of 5:43.25.
