Newton girls soccer cruises past Oskaloosa

Cardinals record second straight shutout

OSKALOOSA — Since making a few changes to their defense, Newton’s girls soccer team is 2-0 with two shutout victories.

The latest win was a 5-0 road victory over Oskaloosa on Tuesday during the Little Hawkeye Conference opener for both teams.

“Tonight’s game was a selfless win,” Newton coach Abby Lamont said. “The girls were able to work the ball around and take multiple shots from different angles along with working on our patterns of play.”

Brooklyn Cupples scored her first two goals of the season, Nykole Hernandez converted a penalty kick to cap the scoring and the Cardinals improved to 3-1 on the season.

Audrey Rausch and Brynn Cazett, the two leading goal scorers on the squad, also had a goal apiece.

Cupples delivered a pair of assists to complete her six-point night. Rausch, Emma-Lopez Garcia and Haley Fuller all had one assist apiece.

The Cardinals, who are 1-0 in conference play, converted five of their 10 shots on goal. Newton was in such strong control of the Indians (0-2 overall, 0-1 in conference play) that goalie Aurora Nehring didn’t have to make a single save.

“We still have things to work on and we’ll continue to do so as we prepare for our next game Thursday,” Lamont said.
