Newton girls down Oskaloosa, boys fall to Indians

Price, Zeien lead Cardinals against Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA — Newton’s bowling teams traveled to Mahaska Bowl and returned home with a varsity split of Oskaloosa on Monday.

Abby Price and Jenna Miller led the Cardinal girls to a 2,355-2,137 win over Oskaloosa, while the Newton boys lost 2,705 to 2,419.

In the girls matchup, Price, Miller and Bailey Hansen all rolled top-five scores. Newton led 1,558 to 1,498 after the first two games and the Cardinals outscored the Indians 797-639 in the Baker games.

Price rolled a 423 series with single games of 235 and 188. She was edged in the individual competition by Oskaloosa’s Rylee Witt, who bowled a 427 series. Witt’s two games were 223 and 204.

Miller finished with a 323 series and individual games of 164 and 159. Hansen was fifth with a 292 series after single games of 153 and 139.

Beka Weithers was seventh. She had a season-high 155 in the first game and rolled a 115 in the second for a 270 series.

Libbie Keith’s 250 series was good enough for eighth. She had single games of 144 and 106. Genessa Slings rounded out the varsity lineup with a 235 series and individual games of 118 and 117.

The Oskaloosa girls did not have a JV team, but the Cardinal JV squad rolled a 2,215.

Sydni Followill turned in a season-best 368 series with individual games of a season-best 190 and a 178. Kaitlyn Gifford rolled a 306 series with single games of 166 and 140.

The Cardinal boys trailed 1,818-1,604 after the first two games. Oskaloosa won the Baker games 887-815.

Ben Zeien led the way for Newton but finished fourth overall with a 370 series. He had individual games of 220 and 150.

Thomas Hodnett was next in fifth with a 355 series. He finished with single games of 179 and 176.

Sebastian King finished seventh, Logan Bown was ninth, Owen Guldberg finished 10th and Dallas King was 12th to round out the rest of the Cardinal lineup.

Sebastian King rolled a 317 series with single games of 144 and 173. Bown finished with a 300 series after individual games of 125 and 175. Guldberg bowled a 262 series with single games of 130 and 132. Dallas King had single games of 99 and 147 to score a 246 series.

Oskaloosa’s Zach Fee rolled a 408 series to win the day. Jarrett Czerwinski was second with a 386 series and Dallas Gilchrist finished third with a 376 series.

Newton’s JV defeated Oskaloosa 1,960-1,709. Tyler Padgett led the way with a 320 series.

Newton girls JV finishes second, boys JV third at conference meet

BONDURANT — Led by Gifford and Followill, the Newton girls’ JV team finished second at the JV conference meet at Great Escape on Wednesday.

Gifford won the JV conference title, Followill finished third and the Cardinals rolled a team score of 1,893. The Newton JV boys finished third in the team race with a score of 2,049.

“Coach Banwell and I are very pleased with how well the JV teams bowled today,” Newton bowling coach Christie Hughes said. “They had a lot of fun and enjoyed themselves. It was great seeing them have so much fun.”

Gifford’s winning series was a 316 as she had individual games of 166 and 150. Followill rolled a 276 series with two single games of 138. Marissa Daughtrey placed fifth overall with a 265 series as she had single games of 153 and 112.

Gifford, Followill and Daughtrey were all first-team all-conference finishers. Sara Sopher was a second-team finisher with a 198 series. Olivia Pickerell earned honorable mention honors with a 158.

The Newton JV boys finished third behind Norwalk’s A and B teams. Evan Benac led the way with a 314 series as he earned second-team all-conference honors after single games of 151 and 163.

David Holmes, Owen Muhs and Padgett all earned honorable mention recognition. Holmes rolled a 262 series, Padgett finished with a 261 series and Muhs bowled a 240 series.

Carson Slusser and Tamion Adams rolled a 233 and 220 series, respectively.
