Mustangs sweep Saydel on Senior Night

Fast starts propel PCM to wins over Eagles

MONROE — PCM’s girls’ basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak in a big way on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs got off to a fast start and never trailed during a 55-22 victory in Heart of Iowa Conference action.

“We finally put two halves of basketball together,” PCM girls’ coach Jeff Lindsay said. “We didn’t have any scoring droughts. We played really well defensively, too.”

PCM led 14-2 after one and held a 38-11 advantage at halftime. The Mustangs won the second half 17-11.

Lilli Baird, Riley Hjortshoj, Celeste Wagaman and Emma George all contributed to the victory on their Senior Night.

Baird finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three steals, Hjortshoj tallied 10 points, six rebounds and three steals, George had four points and nine boards and Wagaman added nine points and three boards.

“I was happy for our team afterwards, but I was really happy for our seniors,” Lindsay said. “The shots went in tonight. And we got contributions from several people at both ends of the floor.”

Paige Steenhoek contributed eight points, four assists and five steals, Sidney Shaver tallied four points, five rebounds and three steals and Sophia Steenhoek grabbed four boards.

The Mustangs (2-13 overall, 1-5 in conference play) won the game despite shooting just 37 percent from the floor, 4-of-17 from long range and 11-of-26 from the free-throw line. PCM also turned it over 20 times.

Saydel fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in HOIC games.

PCM 65, Saydel 19

PCM’s boys’ basketball team made more than half of its shots from the floor, buried seven 3-pointers and a fast start sent the Mustangs to a 65-19 home win Tuesday during HOIC play on Senior Night.

The Mustangs led 24-4 after one quarter and outscored the Eagles (1-5, 0-4) 41-15 the rest of the way.

PCM (7-7, 3-3) got 19 points and four rebounds from Carson VandeLune and 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four blocks from Durant Van Dyke. August Stock also grabbed three boards.

Several PCM seniors contributed to the win on their night. Gatlin Boell tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists, Carson Duinink chipped in nine points and four rebounds, Andrew Mitchell finished with four points and five assists, Gabe Lanphier scored five points and Grant Landgrebe swiped four steals.

PCM shot 51 percent from the floor, were 7-of-17 from 3-point range and hit 6-of-14 from the line.
