When a person approaches the end of their life, due to old age or illness, the support and medical care provided to them is referred to as end-of-life care. Many older patients live with chronic health problems that require specialized care for weeks, and even months, before they pass away.
During this difficult time, patients and their loved ones may find it challenging to deal with the situation from a mental and physical perspective. It's important to reach out for support, and to research the options available that will make the patient's journey as peaceful as possible.
Newton Health Care Center offers skilled nursing and long- and short-term rehabilitation services, along with end-of-life care. Medical and administrative staff at NHCC are caring and compassionate, and have the knowledge necessary to manage a resident's pain and other symptoms to ensure their ongoing comfort. If a resident meets specific hospice criteria, they may be eligible for further support from an outside hospice provider, if desired.
"We offer Comfort Cares for our residents who choose to forego hospice," said Katie Kuhn, Community Liaison Director for Newton Health Care Center. "This program involves keeping the resident as comfortable as possible, and keeping in close touch with the resident's family physician. We also partner with several hospice companies, if a resident chooses to go that route, to ease their pain and suffering."
If a family is considering hospice for their loved one, Newton Health Care Center offers information about the companies it partners with, and helps facilitate a meeting with the appropriate hospice company representatives. "We want the families of our residents to feel comfortable with the company they choose to help care for their loved one," added Kuhn.
