Newton Police Department

• Jack D. Butler, 51, of Eddy, was charged with operating under the influence at 2:22 a.m. March 6 in the 1000 block of West Third Street South. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were on active patrol when they viewed a vehicle stopped in the middle of the roadway near the 300 block of South 11th Avenue West. The vehicle then approached a stop sign and made a wide turn onto West Third Street South, almost hitting a car and fence. Newton police made contact with the driver, identified as Butler. Officers noticed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person and the car. Butler attempted to complete standard field sobriety tests but failed the horizontal gaze and nystagmus and then refused to complete the walk and turn and one leg stand. Butler was unable to keep his balance, almost falling over multiple times while speaking to officers. Butler refused to submit samples to the preliminary breath test or datamaster. He was cited and released.

• Marshondous Deo O. Washington, 24, of Waterloo, was charged with operating under the influence at 11:49 p.m. March 6 in the 400 block of South Second Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were on active patrol when they viewed a vehicle in the 200 block of East Fourth Street South and ran its license plate through the system. The NCIC stated the registration had expired in November 2020. Newton police conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Washington. Officer noted a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. Washington admitted to officers he had been drinking and submitted to standard field sobriety tests, failing all three. He provided a sample for a preliminary breath test which indicated a BrAC of .193. He also provided a sample for the datamaster which indicated a BrAC of .204. He was cited and released.

• Jackson Heard, 29, of Newton, was arrested on a felony warrant for parole violation at 2:50 p.m. March 5 at East 12th Street North and First Avenue East following a two-vehicle traffic accident. He was taken to jail and also cited for failure to obey a traffic control device and no insurance.
