Keeping to its timeline, Mahaska Communication Group was authorized by city council in a 6-0 vote on March 7 to begin first phase construction of its $10 million fiber optic network in Newton. The first phase of the underground install covers the northeast portion of town, spanning 69,168 lineal feet, or 13.1 miles.
City of Newton entered into an agreement with MCG to utilize public right-of-ways for installing its fiber optic network, costing the company $4,150 in fees.
Newton Public Works Director Jody Rhone was asked by council member Vicki Wade if the communications lines always have to be installed on the same side of the street as the other utilities. Rhone said no. There are utilities on bothsides of almost every street in Newton. But there are certain ones staff need to avoid.
During the construction, the Oskaloosa-based telecommunications company will be working alongside its installation contractor and Newton’s public works department to eliminate any conflicts with existing utilities and other possible future improvements along the route, city documents stated.
Rhone said staff and MCG will, first and foremost, avoid public infrastructure such as storm sewers, sanitary sewers and water lines during the installation.
In August 2021, MCG announced its plans to construct its fiber broadband network throughout Newton and create close to 12 new, full-time jobs in the community. The company anticipated underground work to begin in early 2022, with the project to finish by either late 2024 or early 2025.
