One injured in Newton house fire

A Newton resident remains in serious condition after injuries sustained in a house fire that occurred late morning Jan. 31 in the 400 block of West Seventh Street North.

According to a press release, the Newton Fire Department responded to a house fire after a resident called 911 at 11:14 a.m. and stated the house was on fire and the call ended. The Newton Police Department was first on the scene and no reporting party was outside the home. Fire crews arrived and rescued the caller immediately upon arrival. The rescue was made at 11:20 a.m.

The victim was taken to MercyOne Newton Medical Center by ambulance and then flown to MercyOne Des Moines by air ambulance due to weather conditions. After weather conditions improved, the patient was flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals Burn Unit where the patient remains.

Fire crews were on scene until 3 p.m., according to the release, to completely extinguish the fire. The home sustained significant damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Newton Fire Department was assisted by the Kellogg Fire Department and the Baxter Fire Department.
