Man arrested for assaulting victim holding an infant

A Newton man has been charged following a domestic incident put the safety of an infant child in danger.

Shilo R. Duncan, 23, has been charged with domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness, child endangerment and obstruction of emergency communications following an incident around 12:40 a.m. Jan. 9 in the 1000 block of East 10th Street South.

According to the criminal complaint, the Newton Police Department were dispatched in reference to a domestic disturbance. Officers were informed the suspect had taken the phone away from the victim while speaking to emergency personnel.

Upon arrival, the victim told police Duncan had grabbed the victim by the throat and struck the victim in the face. The victim was holding an infant child while the assault was taking place. Officers noted a redness near the victim’s ear.

Officers spoke to Duncan and he admitted to slapping the victim with an open hand. During the altercation, he also tried to take the child away from the victim.

He was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail. He was released on a $4,750 cash or surety bond. His preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 13. A no-contact order against Duncan was requested for the victim and infant child.
