New Mexican restaurant coming to Monroe

El Maguey Mexican Grill and Bar looks to open in January

A spicy treat is coming to Monroe for the new year. El Maguey Mexican Grill and Bar is taking over the bar space at the Monroe American Legion, serving up Mexican favorites to an excited community.

“The people in town are the best,” business partner Marlén said. “We have received many positive messages. They have treated us with affectionate respect.”

With a location already established in Ames, Marlén’s uncle was passing through town and asked in any buildings were available. When CJ’s Bar and Grill closed its doors in June, her uncle was contacted it was available.

Excitement started to build when a banner was hung “El Maguey Mexican Grill and Bar Coming Soon” outside of the building. Remodeling is also taking place on the interior to make it just right for the restaurant.

“(We are) remodeling, we are changing the door because is too old,” Marlén said. “We wanted to paint or change the wall but we might wait little for it.”

A new restaurant in town is a welcome addition to the business landscape with local eateries at a minimum. Also, in such a difficult time for restaurants and small businesses in general due to the pandemic, seeing a “Coming Soon” sign is a positive note in a difficult year

“I’m so excited to have El Maguey Mexican Bar and Grill choose Monroe for their newest location. It will Bering more business to Monroe and it will have a positive impact for all of our small town businesses,” Monroe City Councilwoman Stacie McCoy said. “This is such a great edition to our town. I can’t wait to see the possibilities unfold.”

An opening date is not yet set but the restaurant is look at the first of the year to open it’s doors.

“We are thinking we will open between Jan. 1 to Jan. 15 but is not 100 percent yet because tables that we ordered are coming from Mexico, so all depends on them now we have everything ready pretty much,” Marlén said.

With authentic Mexican food, it’s tag line on Facebook says “Best place for you and your family for lunch and dinner with a good environment.” With the “best margaritas in town” El Maguey is ready for everyone to have a good time, feel comfortable and try all of their delicious plates.
