Jerry Edward Hamer

Jerry Edward Hamer, age 71, local Colfax icon and cubs fan extraordinaire, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston.  Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax.  The family requests that everyone wear Iowa State or Chicago Cubs apparel to honor Jerry’s favorite teams.  The family will greet friends on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax for a time of stories and fellowship. The son of Ernest and Marguerite Helen (Wilson) Hamer, Jerry was born on May 11, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa.  Jerry graduated from Colfax High School in 1970. Jerry loved baseball, basketball, and football. He never missed a game, always carrying his trusty radio to ensure he had all the proper statistics on his clipboard. He traveled to many places over the years - Arizona, Indiana, Texas, Minnesota, Missouri among other states. His favorite stops were local sporting events and restaurants. At home, he enjoyed walks around town sharing local gossip, with a donut or cookie at the ready in his pocket.

Among those who will miss him include his siblings, Mary Jane Conwell, Jim “his favorite sibling” (Sue) Hamer, Nancy (Don) Earles, John (Liz) Hamer; an honorary sister, Erin “Trixie” Pratt; several nieces and nephews and many friends.  Preceding Jerry in death were his parents, a brother-in-law, David Conwell and a nephew, Stephen Conwell. 

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation for the friendship and loving care he received from the staff at Mosaic. Also thank you to the Mercy Hospice in Johnston for keeping Jerry comfortable in his final days.
