Yoga in the Park

New community event every Tuesday at Women’s Club Park in Colfax

Spaced out on the lawn of Women’s Club Park in Colfax, more than a dozen people came out for the first Yoga in the Park this summer. New to the community, it is a time for people to learn about the exercise or expand their knowledge in an outdoor, nature-filled setting.

“We have a phenomenal turn out,” instructor Jen Nevels said.

Nevel found out about the desire to have Yoga in the Park in Colfax after a community member brought the idea to the public. A few people mentioned her to lead the event and she was more than happy to jump on board.

“I have done other Yoga in the Parks so I was like absolutely, Colfax, Iowa, I’m coming,” Nevels said.

Planned for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday’s, at just $5, everyone is invited to participate and find their inner yogi. Those looking to start up should bring their own yoga mat or towel and water or another drink is suggested. Also, depending on the day, sunscreen is also suggested for the open area.

“Here, for Yoga in the Park, it is community-based so it is Yoga Flow. Then, there are modifications so there is availability for everyone,” Nevels said. “The girls here are doing some awesome poses.”

The evening class is planned through June. And with the large community involvement on just one week’s notice, Nevels is excited for the days to come.

As she concluded the first class, Nevels spoke to the crowd about starting their days with a positive mindset. She left the group relaxed and ready to take on the next week with a few new tools for their mornings.

“Let the mind be free. Your mindset sets your day. What will your intentions be? Are we going to go right back to where we know our journey can be, giving it 100 percent, having that gratitude, courage, empowerment,” Nevels said. “Look at this community, it is amazing. Make sure we are feeding the mind nothing but positive.”
