Two burn victims in critical condition following Oct. 24 house fire in Grinnell

Structure ruled complete loss

Multiple fire departments responded to house fire in rural Grinnell Saturday morning that left two people in critical condition from burn injuries.

According to the press release, the Grinnell Fire Department received a report of a house fire at 10:46 a.m. Oct. 24 at 4345 20th St. in Grinnell. Dispatch also told responding fire crews there were potentially two burn victims on scene. Upon arrival, firefighters found the house fully invovled and two individuals outside being helped by neighbors.

First arriving firefighters started extinguishing the fire and treating the patients, according to the release. Both burn victims were transported to Unity Point Health Grinnell Regional Medical Center by East Poweshiek Ambulance. The patients were then airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospital Burn Center in critical condition.

The structure was considered a total loss. Searsboro, Sully, Lynnville and Kellogg Fire responded mutual aid to assist with the fire. The fire is currently under investigation by the State of Iowa Fire Marshal's Office, Grinnell Fire Department and the Poweshiek County Sheriff's Office.
