Steven Lee Hesson, the son of Max Stanley and Elise (Cooper) Hesson, was born Sept. 4, 1948, in Newton. Steve graduated from the Newton Senior High School with the class of 1966. He went on to graduate from Iowa State University with a BS in animal science. On Aug. 15, 1970, Steve was united in marriage with Edith Pauline Barr at the Kellogg United Methodist Church. Steve enjoyed life as a farmer. He loved to work the land and care for his cattle and horses. Steve was a long-time 4-H leader and member of the Sully Co-Op board and he was very active in the Newton Izaak Walton League.

Steve died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020, at his home in rural Newton. He was 72 years old.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sarah Hesson; his sons, Matthew Hesson and Mark Hesson; his sister, Peggy Ann Vance; and his brother, BJ Hesson. Those left to honor Steve’s memory include his wife, Pauline; his daughter, Jennifer (Rob) Heffernen; his son, Aaron Hesson (Kathy Hervey); his grandchildren, Jacob Heffernen, Andrew Heffernen, Kalob Hesson, Carly Hesson, Grant Hesson, Adrianna Cole, Brandon Hicks and Courtney Cole; a very special foreign exchange student and “adopted son” Sergio Delgado; his sister, Sandy Holdt; and his brother, Tim Hesson.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held in June of 2021. Memorials may be designated to Unity Point Hospice, the ALS Association of Iowa or the Izaak Walton League and may be left at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home.
