C-M football falls to L-S in season opener

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully rushed for 484 yards and a big second quarter allowed the Hawks to pull away during a 64-24 win over South Iowa Cedar League rival Colfax-Mingo on Aug. 28 during the season opener by both teams.

Sophomore Kyle Squires rushed for 135 yards and a TD, sophomore Matthias Torres gained 113 yards and a TD and freshman Corder Noun Harder added 103 yards and three scores in the win for the Hawks.

The game was tied at 8-all after one quarter, but L-S (1-0) outscored the Tigerhawks (0-1) 22-6 in the second quarter. The Hawks also won the fourth quarter 19-6.

In the second quarter, Noun Harder scored on runs on 1, 65 and 7 yards to pull away. Torres scored on a 30-yard TD run in the third and Squires added a 55-yarder in the third.

Junior Braden Alberts scored on a 25-yard TD run in the final minute to cap the Hawks’ scoring.

Colfax-Mingo’s Jayden Horrach led the Tigerhawk offense with 114 yards and two scores and junior Colton Lind passed for 137 yards and a TD in his first varsity start at quarterback.

Horrach scored on a 2-yard TD run to give Colfax-Mingo the lead in the first quarter and added a 30-yard TD run in the second.

Freshman Trey Hockemeier scored on a 13-yard TD run in the fourth.

Lind hooked up with senior Zach Steenhoek on a 35-yard TD in the third quarter.

L-S sophomore Lane Fisk had seven tackles, senior Lane Mathis tallied four tackles and one sack and senior Payton Van Wyk and junior Mason Rodibaugh each had six tackles.

Junior Cole Bracewell had 47 yards on seven receptions for the Colfax-Mingo offense and collected six tackles on defense.

Steenhoek finished with 70 yards on four catches to lead the receivers. He also had five tackles on defense, joining sophomore Tevin Wamsher.

It’s Homecoming week for Colfax-Mingo as the Tigerhawks face North Mahaska, another SICL rival, in a non-district game at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4 in Colfax.
