Newton YMCA hosting blood drive Friday

The Newton YMCA is hosting a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday in coordination to the Red Cross of Central Iowa.

There will be 43 donations spots open for those wanting to donate. The Red Cross will be testing all blood, platelet and plasma donation for COVID-19 antibodies.

“This testing may provide critical insight into whether donors may have possibly been exposed to the coronavirus. The Red Cross and YMCA are committed to helping others in meaningful ways during this pandemic,” YMCA Youth and Adult Sports Director Scott Taylor said.

Proper measures will be in place to be sure everyone who chooses to donate will feel safe. All staff and volunteers will be wearing masks while donors can bring their own or can wear one that is provided to them. Hand sanitizer will be available for use before the drive as well as throughout the donation process. The donation beds will be spread out to adhere to proper social distancing. All surfaces and equipment will be heavily sanitized.

“With no known end date to the coronavirus fight, it is important that blood or platelets remain readily available. Blood donation is essential to ensuring the health of our communities. The Y and Red Cross have partnered to provide this vital community service,” Taylor said.

Those interested make an appointment to donate by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.
