Six Mustangs earn spots on all-HOIC softball team

PCM’s softball team’s future is bright. The roster is loaded with young talent.

The 2020 team just couldn’t get over the hump in the win column. Six of those Mustangs earned spots on the all-conference teams during Heart of Iowa Conference action.

First-team selections went to freshmen Riley Johannes and Paige Steenhoek, second-team choices were freshmen Sidney Shaver and Riley DeVore and the honorable mention picks were senior Hailey Schutte and freshman Joslin Briles.

All-conference selections are based on statistics in HOIC games only.

Johannes was a first-team catcher. She batted .405 with 14 RBIs, five doubles, eight walks and six hit by pitches, which all ranked first on the team. Her team-best on-base percentage was .534.

Johannes’ fielding percentage was .918 and she threw out seven of 12 players trying to steal a base.

Steenhoek made the first team as a utility player in large part because she pitched and played left field, right field, shortstop and first base in conference games.

At the plate, Steenhoek batted .333 with eight RBIs, seven runs and five walks. Her OBP was .407. She had two steals.

In the circle, she was 3-4 with an earned run average of 3.71 and added 20 strikeouts, 31 walks and six hit batters. Her fielding percentage was .900.

Shaver made the second team as an infielder and DeVore was a second-team outfielder.

Shaver batted .347 with a team-best 12 runs and also had five RBIs, two steals and five walks. Her OBP of .429 and four doubles ranked second on the team and her fielding percentage was .905.

DeVore ranked second on the team with a .357 batting average and was third with 10 RBIs. She scored five runs, walked three times and had an OBP of .400. Her fielding percentage was .800.

Schutte batted .325, ranked first with 12 runs and six stolen bases and added seven RBIs and two walks. Her OBP was .372 and her fielding percentage was .855.

Briles hit .316 and ranked third in OBP at .426. She was first on the team with eight walks, second with 11 RBIs and added four steals and three doubles. Her fielding percentage was .787.
