Iowa Shrine Bowl football game canceled

The Iowa Shrine Bowl Classic, an annual football all-star game, was canceled on Thursday due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s event was slated to feature three area football players and Baxter head coach Rob Luther, who was chosen to be the head coach for the South All-Stars this year.

Luther told the PCM Explorer on May 28 that he will be the head coach for the 2021 game. And he can bring back his same coaching staff if they want to return.

PCM’s Seth Greiner was picked to play in this year’s game by Luther and his staff before it was canceled.

According to a press release on iowashrinebowl.org, each player, cheerleader and coach will be recognized as a 2020 Iowa Shrine Bowl participant. The plan is to print a commemorative program book for each participant.

Additionally, football players will receive a 2020 Iowa Shrine Bowl jersey, T-shirt and pin. Cheerleaders will receive an Iowa Shrine Bowl backpack and pin. Players and cheerleaders also will receive lifetime passes to future Iowa Shrine Bowl games.

To date, the Iowa Shrine Bowl has raised more than $2.6 million for The Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.
