Police Blotter May 20, 2020

Newton Police Department

• James A. Garland, 40, of Newton, was charged with first-degree harassment at 11:50 p.m. May 17 in the 600 block of East Third Street South. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call for a domestic in progress. Upon arrival, officers heard an aggressive male through the door, identified as Garland, yelling and the victim saying get out of my face and get away from me. The victim stated Garland threatened to kill her and another witness in the house heard the same. Garland was aggressive with officers verbally, as well. The victim wishes for a no contact order as the victim is in fear for her life and the life of other family members. Garland was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
