Chad A. Harms, 30, of McCook, Ill., was charged with fifth-degree criminal mischief and public intoxication at 9:18 p.m. April 6 in the 1100 block of West 22nd Street South. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were dispatched to Days Inn for a male attempting to break into cars. The male was described as wearing no shirt and jeans. Officers were then dispatched to Econo Lodge for a male who entered the building and damaged a door. Officers spoke with the clerk who told officers when he asked Harms if he could help him Harms went down the stairs to a restricted area and told the clerk he needed to hide. After being told he couldn't be down there, Harms kicked open an exit door that had been pad-locked shut causing minor damage to the door jam. The damage was estimated to be $15. Officers said when they located Harms, he was completely naked and sdmitted to officers he had smoked methamphetamine. Harms was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
