• Stacie L. Smith, 48, of Newton, was charged with public intoxication at 7:38 p.m. March 1 in the 1500 block of First Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were dispatched to the call of a woman who appeared to be intoxicated. The reporting party said the woman was falling down. Officers located the female, identified as Smith, in the Hy-Vee parking lot. At first, Smith told officers she had not consumed any alcoholic beverages. Officers said Smith had slow and confused speech. Smith then admitted she had one shot and because of health issues a small amount of alcohol has a big effect on her. Smith also stated she was out walking because her vehicle had a device that required her to blow in it to check her blood alcohol level. Because of this, Smith did not want to drive. Smith took a preliminary breath test which registered a 0.190 BAC. Smith was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Amanda M. Mowery, 34, of Newton was charged with fifth degree theft at 5:01 p.m. March 1 at Walmart. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were told that Walmart Asset Protection employees observed Mowery fail to scan items at the self checkout register. Mowery was scanning items and paid for some items but did not scan all of the items. Asset Protection employees observed Mowery walk past the last point of sale without scanning and paying for all of the items in her possession. The employees were able to identify the items that were not paid for and the total of those items was $76. Mowery was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Rose L. VanRees, 44, of Melbourne, was arrested at 7:16 pm March 1 at in the 400 block of First Avenue East on a Jasper County warrant for a 10-day mittimus on original charge of driving while barred and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Tori L. Craver, 19, was charged with forgery for an incident that occurred at 2:32 p.m. Oct. 16 in the 700 block of First Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were dispatched to Burger King regarding a counterfeit $20 bill. The reporting party stated that a female placed an order and then tried paying for her food with a counterfeit $20 bill. The female drove off when she was told the $20 bill was counterfeit. The reporting party took a picture of the license plate of the car the female was driving. The license plate came back registered to Craver. An investigation was started into Craver and it was discovered that she had been arrested in Unionville, Mo. and that counterfeit $20 bills were found in her vehicle which was the same vehicle she was driving in Newton. The serial numbers of the counterfeit bills in her possession matched the serial number on the counterfeit $20 bill recovered from Burger King. Written statements were taken from two employees at Burger King on the incident and a warrant was requested for Craver. Craver was picked up at the Mahaska County Jail and transported to the Jasper County Jail March 1.
