Cardinal grapplers drop LHC dual to Grinnell

GRINNELL — Things started out well for Newton High’s wrestling team on Thursday in a Little Hawkeye Conference dual at Grinnell.

Anthony Bestell recorded an 18-3 technical fall victory in the 113-pound match. Newton led the hosting Tigers 5-0. But the Cardinals faced a 37-5 deficit by the time the 170-pound match rolled around.

With six matches remaining, Newton had to make a charge if it was going to pull out a road victory. The Cardinals went 5-1, losing 43-28.

Canaan Terpstra claimed a 19-2 technical fall win for the Cardinals at 170. Class 3A fifth-ranked Destin Schroder pinned Grinnell’s Oliver Lounden at 182.

Owen Sanger was pinned in the third round by Grinnell’s Wyatt Hunter at 195.

The marquee match of the night was at 220. Newton’s Gage Linahon, ranked fourth in 3A, squared off with Grinnell’s Kamrin Steveson, who is ranked No. 6 in Class 2A.

Linahon built a 4-1 lead by the conclusion of the first period. It was 7-1 going into the third stanza. Linahon claimed a 9-2 win over Steveson.

At 285, William Muckler pinned Grinnell’s Michael Norenberg in 1:05. Avery White came out on the top side of a 7-5 decision in his 106 match with Grinnell’s Hayden Eaton to end the dual.

Grinnell racked up 18 points on three forfeit wins at 120, 126 and 138. The Tigers’ Class 2A second-ranked 126-pounder, Brock Beck, wrestled up at 132. Beck beat Newton’s Brennan Amos 4-1.

Newton is 9-7 in duals and 2-3 in the LHC.

On Saturday, the Cardinal varsity is at Ankeny for the Dave Ewing Duals, starting at 10 a.m. The junior varsity is at the Colfax-Mingo dual tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday.
