Mustang grapplers down South Hamilton

JEWELL — Landon Fenton, Brian Nicholson and Colby Tool each went 2-0 on the night and Prairie City-Monroe’s wrestling team split a Heart of Iowa Conference triangular on Thursday.

The Mustangs downed host South Hamilton 47-30 and were edged out 42-39 by Greene County. The Rams defeated PCM 51-30 back in early December.

Class 2A No. 9 Fenton (28-4) won both of his matches by first-period pins at 132 pounds. Nicholson won once by fall and once by forfeit at 145 and Tool (8-1) won one match by technical fall and once by forfeit at 160.

Class 2A No. 10 Payton Drake (26-4) opened the South Hamilton dual with a win by fall at 138. Nicholson and William Vanderpool followed with pins at 145 and 152. Tool, who is ranked third at 152, won 24-9 at 160 to put PCM up 23-0.

The Hawks won the next four matches to go up 24-23, but Seth Greiner’s 8-second pin at 285 put the Mustangs back in front for good.

Alex Courtney and Cody Courtney took forfeits at 106 and 120, respectively, and Fenton ended the dual with a pin in the first minute of his match at 132.

Nicholson, Tool, Zeb Padget and Tristan Giles all took forfeits in the first five matches against Greene County to give the Mustangs an early lead.

Cooper Sloan’s 6-5 win at 195 put PCM in front 27-6. Jace Smith then avenged an early-season loss to Matthew Naberhaus with a 20-second pin at 285. The Rams won five of the next six matches to claim the win. Fenton’s pin at 132 came in 1:22.

The Mustangs compete in the Heart of Iowa Conference tournament at 5 p.m. on Friday in Jewell. South Hamilton is the host school.

PCM finishes 0-3 at

Carlisle quadrangular

CARLISLE — PCM added a meet to its schedule after losing a tournament this past weekend, and the Mustangs were 0-3 as a team in a quadrangular hosted by Carlisle on Monday night.

Fenton and Padget both went 3-0 and Smith was 2-0, but the Mustangs lost 48-36 to Pella, 48-35 to Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas and 57-24 to host Carlisle.

Fenton and Padget were both 3-0 with three pins. All three of Fenton’s falls came in the first period and he wrestled all three matches at 138. Padget had a pair of first-period pins.

PCM did not have the services of state-ranked Drake.

Smith finished 2-0 with a pin and a forfeit at 285, while Donovan Nickelson and Tool were both 2-1.

Greiner won his only match by fall at 285.

Against Pella, Alex Courtney took a forfeit and Fenton, Tool, Padget, Giles and Greiner all won by fall.

In the loss to SEW/Melcher-Dallas, Cody Courtney, Nickelson and Smith all took forfeits, while Fenton and Padget won by pin and Tool, who wrestled three times at 160, won by technical fall.

The four wins against Carlisle came from pins by Fenton, Padget, Nickelson and Smith.

Tool’s first loss of the season came by a 5-2 decision against Bryce Murray.
