Born’s 50 paces Norwalk over Newton boys in LHC play

NORWALK — Not many opponents have an answer in stopping or even limiting Norwalk senior Bowen Born.

Newton High’s Cardinals were no exception as Born powered the Class 3A eighth-ranked Warriors to a 77-52 win over the Cardinals. Newton was at Norwalk in Little Hawkeye Conference play Monday in a make-up game from Friday.

The Warriors were able to limit the Cardinals to just 16 first-half points. Norwalk pushed out to a 27-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Behind Born’s 31 points in the first 16 minutes of play, Norwalk was up 44-16 at the break.

Born finished with a new Norwalk single-game scoring mark of 50 points. He hung 49 points on Oskaloosa in a 73-64 win on Jan. 7. He is a co-leading scorer in the entire state of Iowa.

Newton was able to get an offensive spark in the second half but the whole was too deep to come from behind. The Cardinals tallied 36 points in the final two quarters of play.

Newton trailed 59-30 by the end of the third period. It outscored Norwalk 22-18 in the final eight minutes.

Newton was led by senior Kaleb Dydell with 12 points. Sophomore Noah Allen finished with 11 points,

Senior Kyle Long and sophomore Zay Arguello had six points apiece. Scoring four points each were senior Cody Satterfield and sophomore Adam Mattes.

Newton had seven 3-pointers in the game. Dydell and Long each netted two apiece.

Born had seven 3-pointerson the night as Norwalk hit 10 as a team. He was 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals sank 6-of-10 free throw attempts. The Warriors were 5-of-5 at the line.

Newton sophomore Kael Swartz scored three points — all free throws. Seniors Quintrail Coley and Constance Grigsby had two points apiece.

Norwalk (6-2, 4-1 LHC) also got 10 points from Tyler Johnson.

Newton fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in LHC play. The Cardinals host Pella Christian at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday. It’s the first home game for Newton since the holiday break.
