C-M wrestling goes 2-1 in home quad

COLFAX — Mariah Webster trailed 8-1 and 8-3 in two of her matches during Colfax-Mingo’s home wrestling quadrangular on Jan. 9.

But she stayed engaged, battled, never gave up and found a way to rally both times as the Tigerhawks went 2-1 on the night against Montezuma, Pleasantville and BGM.

Webster was one of six Tigerhawks to go 3-0 for the night. Colfax-Mingo started with a 48-36 loss to BGM but bounced back with a 75-6 win over Montezuma and a 50-30 victory over Pleasantville.

“I told them before the (Pleasantville) dual that we could assume we were going to lose because Pleasantville beat BGM or we can go out and wrestle and find out what happens,” Colfax-Mingo coach Erin Hume said.

“That was a more consistent and better wrestled dual.”

Webster’s rally at 126 pounds against Pleasantville’s Gage Lyon was a key win in the team victory over the Trojans.

Hunter Green and Class 1A No. 10 Cyden Fitch scored 10 points in the next two matches to help C-M take control, and the Tigerhawks finished 7-2 in contested matches against the Trojans (7-4).

Colfax-Mingo was 2-1 in contested matches against Montezuma and 4-8 against BGM.

The Tigerhawks were without starters Noah Strohmeyer (106) and Tim Carroll (152) because of illnesses.

“It just seemed like some of them expected to win matches just by showing up,” Hume said about the BGM dual. “We didn’t show up and they did and the dual got away from us.”

Webster, Fitch (21-4), Hunter Stevens, Maggie Schroeder, Trystin Ross (18-5) and Shane Aikin (18-8) all were 3-0 for the Tigerhawks (12-4). Danica Linn, Hunter Green (14-7) and Will Thornton each won two matches.

The Tigerhawks fell behind 24-0 and 42-6 to BGM (6-5). The only win during that stretch was Webster’s third-period pin over Haris Nasir. She trailed 8-1 at the time before catching Nasir with a headlock.

“I’d rather not be behind, but it makes for exciting matches I guess,” Webster said. “I could have done better. My stance wasn’t good and my hips were always down. It still felt nice to go 3-0.”

Colfax-Mingo won five straight matches starting with Fitch’s pin at 145 pounds. Stevens followed Fitch with another pin.

Ross and Schroeder then both took forfeits and Aikin’s win by fall gave the Tigerhawks a chance with one match to go but the rally fell short.

“I am faster than they are so that helps for sure,” said Aikin about wrestling at 182. “The fireman’s was good for me tonight. The bigger guys bend over more.”

Colfax-Mingo took 11 forfeits against Montezuma (0-10). Jakob Chapman won 5-0 at heavyweight to open the dual and Ross also won his match by fall at 170.

The best performance for C-M came against Pleasantville.

The Trojans took forfeits at 106 and 113 to open the dual, but Linn took a forfeit at 120.

Webster fell behind 8-3 against Lyon at 126. But another rally led to a second pin for the night as she evened the dual at 12-all.

After Green’s pin at 132 and Fitch’s 17-6 major decision at 138, Pleasantville got back on the board with a win by pin at 145.

But Stevens won 18-4 at 152, Schroeder took a forfeit at 160 and then Ross, Aikin and Thornton all won by fall at the next three weights to secure the victory.

“We came in more prepared in that one,” said Stevens, who was wrestling at 152 for the first time this season. “I think we showed up and wanted to use the loss to BGM as motivation.”

Colfax-Mingo hosted a quadrangular on Jan. 14. The Tigerhawks wrestle in a triangular hosted by HLV at 6 p.m. on Jan. 16 in Victor.
