Department

• James D. Barber, 48, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse at 3:15 p.m. Nov. 27 in the 1400 block of North 11th Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call for a domestic assault. Officers arrived and talked with the victim about the incident and she stated she allegedly had been choked by Barber and officers observed she had red marks on her neck. Barber was in the apartment and in the back bedroom there was also another male subject who witnessed the assault. Statements were taken from both the victim and witness and the victim asked for a no contact order against Barber. Barber was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Christopher L. Cleveland. 37, of Newton, was charged with trespassing, possession of drug paraphernalia, providing false identification information and unlawful possession of prescription drugs at 2:09 a.m. Nov. 30 in the 700 block of North Second Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 21 officers responded to Walmart for a theft and when they arrived they spoke with loss prevention. The loss prevention officer told Newton police he saw Cleveland in Walmart and Cleveland had been trespassed from Walmart. The loss prevention officer showed Newton police the paperwork that shows Cleveland is trespassed from Walmart. Newton police tried to locate Cleveland and it led to a warrant being requested. At 2:09 a.m. Nov. 30 Newton police responded to a call in the 700 block of North Second Avenue East for a disturbance. When Newton police arrived they located two people and recognized one as Cleveland and dispatch told officers that Cleveland had an active warrant. When officers told Cleveland of his warrant he told them he was not Cleveland but rather Chris Holbert. Cleveland eventually admitted he was himself and provided an identification card and his warrant was confirmed. During a search incident to arrest, Newton officers located a glass pipe with burnt marijuana residue in his jeans pocket. Officers also located a bottle with no prescription and Cleveland told Newton police it was Xanax which is a prescription drug only. Cleveland was arrested on a warrant for the trespass charge at 2:16 am Nov. 30. He was additionally charged with unlawful possession of prescription drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and provide false identification information and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jeffrey D. Lee, 31, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse at 1:50 a.m. Dec. 1 in the 400 block of North Fourth Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a domestic in progress where the female was frantic. When Newton police arrived the victim said Lee had allegedly shoved, slapped, pulled her hair, put her in a headlock and choked her so that her breathing was impaired because Lee was told to keep his new stereo quiet. The victim had redness all around her neck and suffered a knee injury from being pushed to the ground. The victim requested a no contact order against Lee and Lee was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jwan T. Roush, 22, of Cedar Rapids, was charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication and interference with official acts from an incident that occurred at 11:14 p.m. Oct. 24 in the 100 block of First Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, officers responded to a call at Pour Bastards Pub in response to a large fight in progress. Newton police identified Roush as being a participant in the fight as he had facial injuries and unbiased witnesses pointed him out. Roush also had the strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Newton police said Roush also had red, watery eyes, slurred speech and was unstable on his feet, showing signs of intoxication. Roush was told several times by officers to sit down and stay in the area and yet Roush allegedly left the scene after being told by officers to return. Roush allegedly ran east down the street and did not come back which lead to Newton police requesting a warrant. Roush was picked up by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant for the charges. He was taken into custody from a Tama County Deputy by the Newton Police Department in Gilman, where he was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
