Cardinals earn 3A District 7 football honors

Newton High’s Cardinals led the Class 3A District 7 in team rushing and is standing No. 9 in Class 3A overall in rushing. Four teams remain in the 3A playoffs — Lewis Central, which is No. 1 in rushing, Western Dubuque, Solon and Sargent Bluff-Luton.

The Cardinals came up shy of a fourth straight winning season as they went 3-6 overall and 1-4 in District 7 play. Newton had five players earn 2019 Class 3A All-District 7 first-team honors and 11 garner district honorable mention honors.

Pella (9-3) was the District 7 champion at 5-0 with Oskaloosa (6-4) in second at 4-1. Both teams were in the Class 3A playoffs with Oskaloosa losing in the opening round and Pella lost a quarterfinal round game to Solon.

Grinnell (6-3) took third at 3-2 in the district and Knoxville (6-3) was fourth at 2-3. Newton was fifth and South Tama (0-9) finished sixth at 0-5.

At the end of the regular season, the Cardinals rolled up 2,326 yards on 436 carries as a team. The Cardinals had six of the top 15 rushers in District 7. All statistics listed on Iowa QuikStats for Class 3A District 7 are overall numbers as there is no list of just “district game” statistics available.

With Pella’s loss last Friday, the coaches’ all-district selections were released. Only a list of players selected for All-District and honorable mention was available with no positions designated. Also there was an All-District Academic Team selected.

Newton seniors Gage Linahon and Julian Hotchkin claimed Class 3A District 7 All-District honors for the second straight year. Also earning all-district honors were seniors William Cheng, Zane Kohlmeyer and Caanan Terpstra. Cheng was an honorable mention selection as a junior.

Garnering District 7 honorable mention honors for the Cardinals were seniors Dalton Altemeier, Kaleb Dydell, Dylan Farver, Kyle Long, Clay Meyer, Cody Satterfield, Destin Schroder and Blake Sevenbergen, junior Lane Arrowood and sophomores Zay Arguello and Cole Conner.

Each district team had players and managers earn All-District 7 Academic honors. Here are Newton’s:

Cheng led the Cardinals in rushing most of the season but missed the final game and a half because of an injury. He finished 10th among district running backs with 484 yards on 68 carries for a 7.1-yard per carry average. He scored five touchdowns. He made 10 catches for 84 yards.

Hotchkin was Newton’s top receiver with 28 catches for 504 yards, an 18-yard per catch average, which was third best in the district. He was second among district receivers with seven touchdown catches.

Linahon played on the offensive and defensive lines for Newton. Linahon has been a three-year starter on the offensive line as a tackle. This season playing along the defensive line, Linahon had five solo tackles and three assisted tackles. He recovered a fumble.

Leading the Newton defense are Terpstra and Kohlmeyer as linebackers. Terpstra had 34 solo tackles and 10 assisted tackles. He was tied for 10th in the district with solo tackles and tied for eighth with total tackles (44). He made three solo quarterback sacks. Terpstra finished second with 15 tackles for loss among district defenders.

Kohlmeyer racked up 35 unassisted tackles, which was sixth in the district, and was 13th in total tackles with 42. Kohlmeyer had seven tackles for loss and two solo quarterback sacks. He had one interception and two fumble recoveries.

For the honorable mention Cardinals, Long was Newton’s two-year starting quarterback and finished third in the district in passing — 62-of-127 for 930 yards. He had nine touchdown passes and threw six interceptions. He also rushed for 305 yards on 85 carries with one TD.

Satterfield finished as Newton’s leading rusher with 556 yards on 80 carries, a 6.9-yard per carry average, which was eighth overall in the district. He made 11 receptions for 120 yards.

Farver scored the most rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals with 10, which was fifth in the district. He was 11th in rushing with 408 yards on 89 carries, 4.6-yard average per carry. He had two catches for 55 yards.

Dydell made the switch from defense to offense this season as the Cardinals’ starting tight end. Along with his blocking in the running game, Dydell mad six catches for 111 yards and had two TD catches.

Meyer and Sevenbergen were starting offensive guard and center. They were key in the Cardinals’ running game effectiveness.

Altemeier and Schroder were Newton’s inside linebackers finishing as the teams’ No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, tacklers. Altmeier had 32 solo tackles and 21 assisted tackles. Schroder had 28 solo stops and 16 assisted tackles and had five tackles for loss.

Arguello had 26 solo tackles and seven assisted tackles as a defensive safety. He had one quarterback sack.

Conner and Arrowood played on the defensive line. Conner had six solo tackles and 1.5 assisted tackles, three tackles for loss and three quarterback sacks. Arrowood had four unassisted tackles and 13 assisted tackles, and he had 3.5 tackles for loss and one quarterback sack.
