Area Football: Tigerhawks face Wayne in home opener

Colfax-Mingo’s football team didn’t get off to good starts in either of its first two games of the season.

The Tigerhawks ended up on the right side of the final score in the season opener, but a 21-0 deficit last week against Martensdale-St. Marys was too much to overcome.

Tigerhawk head coach Jeff Lietz hopes his squad learned from last week’s 27-21 loss.

“I don’t think we were ready to play,” Lietz said. “We might have overlooked them. It was a good lesson for us.”

The Tigerhawks play in front of their home fans for the first time this season as they host Wayne at 7 p.m. on Friday in Colfax.

The gameplan is similar to last year when C-M earned a 27-22 road win.

“They lost some guys up front, but they are still big on the line and they still give the ball to the running back a lot,” Lietz said.

Wayne’s running back is Chase Keifer, who led all of Iowa last year with 2,191 rushing yards.

Keifer had 279 against C-M a year ago and enters Friday with 324 yards and a 7.4 yards per carry average.

Wayne is averaging 20.6 points per game and surrendering 37.3.

The Falcons’ lone win came against Woodward Academy.

“Their defense will press our receivers at the line, bring pressure and try to get Brady (Berkey) to make bad decisions with the ball,” Lietz said.

Berkey has thrown for 601 yards and seven touchdowns in the first two games.

Trystin Ross has hauled in 20 catches for 257 yards and five TDs. Ross also leads the Tigerhawk defense with 14.5 tackles and a sack.

PCM (1-1) at Roland-Story (1-1), 7:30 p.m.

The Mustangs will try to bounce back from their first loss since 2017 during the first road game of the season against the Norsemen on Friday night.

Roland-Story lost 35-12 to Gilbert last week, while PCM dropped a 14-7 heartbreaker to West Marshall.

Roland-Story is led by Iowa State commit Zach Twedt, who has rushed for 242 yards and four TDs. He also leads the defense with 24.5 tackles.

Baxter (1-2) at

Melcher-Dallas (1-1), 7 p.m.

The Bolts’ two toughest games could be behind them and now they’ll try to snap a two-game losing streak against Melcher-Dallas on Friday night.

Melcher-Dallas is coming off a 93-0 loss to Lenox. It has just 151 rushing yards through two games.

Steve Krpan and Ryan Krpan lead the Saints.

Steve Krpan has thrown for 239 yards and four TDs. Ryan Krpan has hauled in four TDs and has eight catches for 229 yards. He also has a pick six on defense and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Baxter is coming off an 87-8 loss to No. 1 Don Bosco. The Bolts had only 68 total yards in defeat.

Lynnville-Sully (0-3)

at Highland (2-0), 7 p.m.

Highland has rushed for 406 and 313 yards in its two games this season.

The Hawks have allowed at least 376 yards rushing in each of their three games.

Connor Grinstead has 203 passing yards and four TDs, Cole Adamson has 279 rushing yards and three scores and Owen Donovan has gained 271 yards on the ground and scored five times.

Donovan also is Highland’s punter, kicker, kickoff returner and punt returner.
