Mustangs sweep Polar Bears

DES MOINES — PCM’s volleyball team served up 26 aces in a three-game sweep of Des Moines North on Sept. 5 during a non-conference match.

The Mustangs defeated the Polar Bears 25-12, 25-14, 25-16. The victory snapped a four-match losing streak for PCM (3-11). North fell to 0-4.

Shelby Voeller led the Mustangs with five kills and nine assists. Celeste Wagaman tallied four kills and Jacki Vos finished with three kills. Bella Stone delivered five assists and Chelsea Bird had a pair of digs.

PCM was 68-of-75 in serves. Emma Houser was 18-of-20 with seven aces. Stone finished 11-for-13 with six aces and Bird was a perfect 17-for-17 with four aces. Vos tallied four aces and Chloe Inskeep served up three aces and was 9-of-10 overall.

The Mustangs host Saydel in their home opener at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12 in Monroe.

Mustangs compete

at BCLUW tournament

CONRAD — PCM managed just one set victory during a busy day at the BCLUW tournament on Sept. 7.

The Mustangs went 0-5 on the day and were swept in four of the five matches. They took one set from South Tama County but lost in three.

South Tama (1-10) defeated PCM 19-21, 24-22, 15-10 to get its first win of the season. PCM also lost matches to Benton 21-9, 21-10, North Polk 21-16, 21-9, Hudson 21-5, 21-6 and host BCLUW 21-13, 21-18.

The Mustangs had 20 kills against South Tama, but finished with a negative hitting percentage in two of the five matches and were in single digits for kills in three of the five. They had 14 kills against BCLUW (7-5).

PCM was pretty good from behind the service line, converting 87 percent at 118-of-135.

Benton improved to 6-3, North Polk is 9-4, while Class 2A No. 9 Hudson jumped to 12-1 and 1A No. 15 BCLUW ended the weekend at 7-5.

Leading the Mustangs on the weekend was Voeller, who had six kills, 14 digs, 35 assists and was 25-of-25 in serves.

Vos finished with 11 kills, 21 digs and was 10-of-12 in serves. Bird tallied 23 digs, two aces and was 29-of-29 in serves, Houser collected six kills, six digs, two aces and was 20-of-25 in serves and Wagaman tallied a team-high 17 kills.

Claire Wilson added eight kills, 19 digs and was 13-of-16 in serves, Meghan Kinnamon had 11 digs and Inskeep finished with eight digs and was 11-for-11 in serves.
