Newton Police Department conducts nighttime traffic safety project

The Newton Police Department conducted a nighttime traffic safety project Aug. 9.

The primary objectives of this project were to locate alcohol violations, excessive speed and seat belt enforcement. The project was conducted in the City of Newton between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

During the project Newton Police Officers arrested one person for Driving While License Suspended and conducted field sobriety maneuvers on another person, which resulted in a negative test for operating while intoxicated. Newton Police conducted 14 traffic stops resulting in 18 warnings for various traffic violations, one seat belt citation and one Driving While License Suspend citation.

The NPD would like to remind motorists to buckle up, slow down, and obey all traffic laws. Voluntary compliance with Iowa’s traffic safety laws is always encouraged.

Primary funding for the project was provided by the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.
