A fire early Monday morning caused thousands of dollars worth of damage at the Newton Sanitary Landfill, 3202 Highway 14.

The Newton Fire Department responded to the call at 1:12 a.m. . Newton Public Works was also on scene.

Newton Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik described the fire as roughly 100 feet long and 60 feet wide when firefighters arrived at the landfill. Wellik said the fire department extinguished the flames and then the landfill staff came out and put dirt on top of where the flames were.

Wellik said the area affected by the fire did sustain damage before the fire department extinguished the flames.

“They burnt up their tarps ... I think they said it was about $16,000 worth of damage,” Wellik said.
