Tigers deck Cardinals in LHC contest

GRINNELL — Newton High’s Cardinals hit the ball against host Grinnell’s Tigers on Friday night — nine hits — but they left 10 on base. The Cardinal softball team lost 8-1 to the Tigers in Little Hawkeye Conference play.

The Cardinals scored in the first inning then their offense was stymied the rest of the game. Newton’s defense committed four errors, which benefited the Tigers.

Newton fell to 10-12 overall and 5-9 in LHC play, going 1-2 against Grinnell the season. The Tigers are 10-11 and 5-8.

The Cardinals have a LHC varsity doubleheader at Oskaloosa on Monday. The first game starts at 5:30 p.m.

With one gone in the first inning on Friday, Chassidy Henwood, who was 3-for-4 in the game, singled. Peyton Maher drove in the run with a double. Grinnell responded in its half of the first with a double and an error, setting up a two-run double by Hannah Behrens.

The Tigers added three runs in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth. Newton had the bases loaded with one gone in the third and couldn’t get a run across.

Maher (10-6) took the pitching loss for Newton. She allowed five hits, walked three and hit two batters. She also struck out eight.

Henwood had three singles and Lakin Jenkins hit a single. Maher had a single and a double. Mac Brown and Maddison Thayer each had a base hit.
