Shaver’s homer not enough for PCM softball in loss to Trojans

STATE CENTER — Anna Shaver delivered a first-inning blow to West Marshall on Thursday night when she hit a solo home run.

Unfortunately, the Mustangs would only get three more hits the rest of the way, and West Marshall rallied to win 4-1 at home during non-conference action.

“We played a really good game on the pitching and defensive front,” PCM coach Shaun Hudnut said. “Offensively, we’re trying to find ways to score runs. We had good at-bats tonight, but are not getting the bounces to go our way.”

Shaver had two of PCM’s four hits at the plate.

She scored the team’s only run and had the team’s lone RBI with her third home run of the season.

Belle Hudnut and Riley Johannes had the other two hits. Sidney Shaver, Camryn Wignall and Paige Steenhoek all drew walks.

“We had a great opportunity to score on Johannes’ second at-bat,” Coach Hudnut said. “She hit a rocket down the line, but right fielder made a great catch. We would have scored two runs if it dropped. Then we couldn’t capitalize in the sixth when we had the first four girls reach safely.”

Hudnut said Steenhoek pitched one of her best games of the season, despite taking the loss against the Trojans (11-9).

Steenhoek (6-10) allowed three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

“She made good pitches,” Coach Hudnut said of Steenhoek.

“West Marshall had the luck of having three or four cactus leaguers drop in.”

PCM (7-11) plays Nevada at 7 p.m. on Friday in Nevada.
