My girls are growing up

Editor’s Note: This column was originally published June 13, 2017.

We are going to have a visitor at our house in the near future. One with the initials TF.

At a recent dentist visit, my oldest daughter discovered she has two loose teeth. She has been more than ready to lose a tooth after seeing many of her friends lose them throughout the year.

Since feeling them wiggle, getting one to come out has been a priority. I can see her tongue moving them back and forth, loosening them up in hopes one will come out soon.

I’m not sure when a tooth might come out or how it is going to happen, but I hope I am there. While the idea of losing a tooth is exciting, I’m not sure what she is going to think when it comes time to pull it out.

Currently, she is happy wiggling them but won’t let us touch them to see how close they are. I only hope it happiness and smiles when one does finally come out and not tears or fear.

She is excited to have the Tooth Fairy come to our house. As a kid, my parents had me put my teeth in a glass of water on a downstairs windowsill. The Tooth Fairy would then take the tooth and replace it was random coins.

As the day gets closer I have to put on my own fairy wings, I’m trying to decide which route I will take. She is a pretty hard sleeper so under the pillow is definitely an option. I’m also thinking of carrying on the tradition my parents and grandparents did. I guess I should talk with my husband to see if he has any input, too.

My oldest also has another new first, one that came just after she turned 6. Like most kids, my girls have always taken baths. Bubble, tons of toys and giggles along with me straining to shampoo and condition two mops of hair have been a part of my life for more than six years.

In a decision made all on her own, my oldest stated she now wants to take showers because they are refreshing. The giggles were still there as she enjoyed the “rain” and I still had to shampoo and condition her hair, but she is certainly taking her first steps to growing up.

I know more of these growing up firsts are coming my way and will double when my youngest starts, too. It is exciting to see them grow up, but I am going to keep enjoying them being little as long as possible.
