Newton Police Department

• Chadwick G. Cooper, 35, of Newton, was arrested at 12:16 a.m. May 27 in the 500 block of South Eight Avenue West on a Jasper County probation violation warrant for possession of controlled substance charges. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Lisa R. Coonts, 55, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness at 9:02 p.m. May 24 in the 1200 block of First Street North. According to the Newton Police Department, officers were dispatched to a residence on First Street North on a report of a domestic assault. Upon arrival, officers met with the victim and Coonts. Coonts said she had attempted to physically prevent the victim from entering the residence by pushing and restraining her. The victim said she had been pushed, choked and struck on the cheek to prevent her from entering the home. The victim was able to get free and run down the hallway to her bedroom as Coonts threw a bowl of fruit at her. Officers noted the visible injuries to the victim’s cheek and neck from the altercation. Coonts was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Stacia R. Hill, 22, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft May 24. According to the Newton Police department, officers were called at 5:43 p.m. May 23 to Casey’s on West 18th Street South in reference to a female leaving the convenience store without paying for gas. A license plate was provided and traced back to Hill. Upon arrival at the store, officers spoke to employees who stated they could not accept checks from Hill because she had bounced checks in the past. After Hill was told this, she became upset and left. Officers viewed video surveillance and confirmed Hill as the person of interest. The amount owed was $35.20. Hill received a citation and was released to appear in court.

• Joseph N. Carolus, 18, of Newton, was arrested at 6:07 p.m. May 29 in the 200 block of East Eighth Street South on two Altoona Police Department warrants, one for driving while license suspended and one for leaving the scene of an accident. He was taken into custody and transported to the westbound Interstate 80 rest area where he was turned over to the Altoona PD.
