Van Maanen comes up short at 1A golf regional

LYNNVILLE — Despite playing on her home golf course, Lynnville-Sully senior Tessa Van Maanen missed the qualifying cut for the 2019 Iowa Class 1A State Girls’ Golf Tournament.

Van Maanen shot a 98 on rounds of 50 and 48 at Lynnville’s Diamond Trail Golf Club in Monday’s Class 1A regional tournament. She finished ninth and the top six individuals advance to state.

“Her long game was really good but she struggled a bit with her short game,” L-S golf coach Alison Knouse said. “Tessa has so much to be proud of having a phenomenal season.”

Van Maanen was shooting for a second straight trip to the state meet. She finished first or second individually all season long in duals.

“She is so deserving of all of her success,” Knouse said. “We will miss her next year.”

Grundy Center was the regional champion with a 394. Second place Iowa Valley had a 402. Both advance to the state tournament May 28-29 at Marshalltown.

Abby Guardian of Hudson and Aubrey Duncan of Columbus Community each shot an 86 to go 1-2. Addie Pry of New London (87) was third, Grundy Center’s Lauren Dirks (93) was fourth, Iowa Valley’s Taylor Smith and Grundy Center’s Frannie Brown were fifth and sixth with 94s.
