C-M softball takes down BGM in extras

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo’s softball team scored in the first and last innings of its season-opening game against South Iowa Cedar League rival BGM on Monday night.

The two runs were enough to take down the Bears as the Tigerhawks secured a 2-1, eight-inning home win over BGM.

Colbee Cunningham struck out 10 and walked four in the circle, and Rilee Slycord and Braedynn Rawlins both had a pair of hits at the plate. Madison Gilkison and Chelsea Russell also each walked twice.

In the eighth, Brennan Rhone walked, Carley Underwood was hit by a pitch and Kylie Doty drew a one-out walk to load the bases.

With two outs, Slycord hit a ball that was mishandled at shortstop, and Rhone came across the plate to give the Tigerhawks (1-0 overall, 1-0 in the SICL) the victory. The Bears (0-1, 0-1) had two errors in the game.

Colfax-Mingo plays Baxter at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Baxter. It’s the season opener for the Bolts.
