Sean Gaskell African Kora Concert

6 p.m. Monday — Professional musician Sean Gaskell gives a performance and educational demonstration on the kora, an ancient 21-stringed harp from West Africa. The concert will feature traditional songs that are the heart and soul of the kora’s musical repertoire, in addition to some of Gaskell’s own personal compositions. This event is free to attend and open to the public. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Bibliophile Book Club

1 p.m. Wednesday — Join our library book club for a discussion of “Grandma Gatewood’s Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail” by Ben Montgomery. Request your copy of the book at the library information desk or by calling 641-792-4108. New members always welcome.

Teen Board Game Club

4 and 6:30 p.m. May 23 — Join us for our new Teen Board Game Club. Learn how to play games like Catan, Ticket to ride, Carcassonne, King of Tokyo, Dixit, Zooloretto and Forbidden Island. New games will be introduced at every meeting. New and expert players both welcome. No registration required, a snack will be served. Mobile Device Workshop
with U.S. Cellular

5:30 p.m. May 23 — Do you have questions about your smartphone or mobile device? Here’s your opportunity to ask an expert. Join U.S. Cellular at the library for an informal workshop on using your mobile device. This program is free to attend and open to the public. Attendees do not need to be U.S. Cellular customers to attend.

Library Closed for Memorial Day

May 27 — The Newton Public Library will be closed May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The library will resume regular hours on May 28.

Summer Reading Kick-Off Picnic

4 to 7 p.m. June 4 — Swing by the library between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on June 4, to register for youth Summer Reading events and pick up your reading logs. All youth registrants will receive a reading log, plastic book bag, and a free youth admission ticket to the Blank Park Zoo. Hotdogs will also be served by Newton Hy-Vee, on the library lawn. This event will also be the first opportunity to register for youth summer events at the library.

Hanson Family Jugglers

1 and 3 p.m. June 7 — Kids of all ages will love the Hanson Family Jugglers. The group will perform two shows, one at 1 p.m. and another at 3 p.m. No registration required for this event. Questions? Contact Youth Services Librarian, Phyllis Peter at 641-792-4108.
