Cardinal girls win final golf dual of season

MARSHALLTOWN — Mutual beneficial was Thursday’s 18-hole golf dual between Newton High’s Cardinal girls and the BCLUW Comets. The two teams squared off at the American Legion Golf Course at Marshalltown.

“We wanted to get in a competitive round on the regional golf course before Monday’s regional,” Newton head golf coach Scott Enyart said. “BCLUW wanted to play on the course the Class 1A state tournament as it is hoping to qualify for the state.”

Enyart said the Comets presented a good match-up for the Cardinals for a final regular-season golf dual. The Comets were third at the 2018 Class 1A state tournament.

Newton’s Rylee Heryford was the meet medalist with a 79 on rounds of 41 and 38. She had 11 pars on the day.

Bekah Vasseau took the runner-up honors with a 97 (51-46). Enyart said after a rough start, Vasseau got things clicking and played consistent golf the final 11 holes.

Abby Price finished with a 98 (49-49). Enyart said three holes jumped up and got Price.

“But she hit the ball awesome all day. We’ve talked about ways to stay away from big numbers on Monday,” Enyart said.

Arieal Lum had a 107 (56-51) to round out the top four scores for Newton. Jordan Pritchard shot a 120 (63-57).

“All the kids improved from the front nine to the back nine today,” Enyart said. “They also handled playing in the heat pretty well.”

Newton plays in a Class 4A regional at 10 a.m. Monday on the American Legion Golf Course.
