Spring is a busy real estate season, so it is important to get your home ready for the market.
While you may be focused on the interior of your home before the For Sale sign is placed in your yard, don’t discount the curb appeal. Potential buyers form their first impression of a home based on its curb appeal.
Heartland Iowa Realty, serving Jasper County for over six years, offers these tips to getting your curb appeal ready for the busy spring market.
1. De-clutter the yard
When the snow melts, remove any items that may distract potential home buyers from the exterior. Chairs, lawn art and toys should be put away in storage.
2. Use a power washer
If you don’t already have one, look into buying or renting a power washer to clean paved surfaces. Clean fences, brick and vinyl siding to make grimy surfaces look like new.
3. Check outdoor lighting
Replace existing fixtures or update light bulbs to make your home brighter from the exterior.
4. Makeover your mailbox
Did the snowplow damage your mailbox? Is the paint peeling? Update your mailbox with a new one or a fresh coat of paint. Consider adding plants around the mailbox if weather allows.
5. Clean your windows
Your house may be clean, but a dirty window can distract from the overall appearance of your home. Spend time cleaning the windows – including the frame – and replace any panes that are broken.
6. Focus on the front door
Make your front entrance as appealing as possible with a wreath and welcome mat at the front door. Add new hardware or a new coat of paint to create an attractive doorway.
Winter weather can linger into spring, so give yourself 2-3 weeks of preparation time before you plan to show your home, and make the outside of your home look just as appealing as the inside.
