Police release identity of the man found dead near a creek in Newton

Officers still do not know the cause of death, investigation ongoing

The man whose body was found dead Sunday morning in Newton has been identified as Gregory Jayson Zwick.

Zwick, 47, of Newton, was found deceased on the bank of a creek behind the Hy-Vee grocery store near the 1400 block of South Fourth Avenue East.

Officers received a report at 9:50 a.m. March 28 of what appeared to be someone laying in a creek and not moving.

Police found no apparent signs of foul play at the scene, and the cause of death is not yet known.

The incident is still under investigation, pending an autopsy.

A memorial vigil organized by the local Democratic party will be held 5 p.m. Monday outside the Jasper County Courthouse square in Newton.

According to the Facebook event, participants are asked to wear a mask and maintain social distancing guidelines.
