Heart to Heart
10 a.m. Friday and Saturday Downtown Newton
Heart to Heart is a way for businesses to give back to a nonprofit of their choice. Each retailer/restaurant/service business chooses a nonprofit in the Newton community and offers a discount, gift or other incentive to customers who bring in a donation(s) for the individual nonprofit they chose to support for this event.
Nature Tots
10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge
Children ages 3-5 are invited to bring their favorite adult and join a refuge naturalist to read stories, explore outside, make nature crafts and more. The topic for Saturday’s lesson will be “Signs of Wildlife.”
Cross County Skiing
1 to 3 p.m. Saturday Maytag Park in Newton
Jasper County Conservation invites the public to cross-country ski and snowshoe. Equipment will be checked out in the parking lot behind the Jasper County Armor/Annex Building, 1030 W. Second St. S. in Newton. A limited number of snowshoes, skis and boots in all sizes will be available for a $5/person equipment fee or participants can bring their own equipment.
Food and Fun Night
4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday Sully Christian School
Sully Christian School is hosting a Food and Fun Night Saturday. The theme is “Out of this World.” A meal will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and a silent auction from 4:20 to 6:45 p.m. Games begin a 5 p.m. and the live action starts at 7 p.m.
Spelling Bee
1:30 p.m. Sunday Sacred Heart Catholic Church
The local Knights of Columbus will holds its annual spelling bee. The first group will be fourth grade at 1 p.m. Fifth grade will start at 1:30 p.m., sixth grade at 2 p.m. and seventh grade at 2:30 p.m. Participants need to arrive at least 15 minutes before each grade level to register. The first and second place winners will advance to the statewide competition, which is held in March in Ames.
